Best way to rent a car in Kyrgyzstan

brandon
Hey everyone, heading to Kyrgyzstan soon, and I really want to explore beyond the capital, get up into the mountains, and see the lakes at my own pace. Never hired a vehicle there before, so I am a bit in the dark about what to expect. What documents do they ask for, and is it smarter to book ahead, or just find something when I land?

Good call, public transport will get you between the main towns, but the real magic, like Song Kol or the passes south of Issyk-Kul, is way off the beaten track, and you simply cannot reach it on a bus. A sturdy 4x4 with proper ground clearance is the way to go, because the asphalt can disappear pretty fast once you leave the highway. Bring your passport, your home driving licence, and an IDP is a sensible backup to carry, even if not everyone asks for it. Check out the listings on this site to browse your options and rent a car in Kyrgyzstan https://getrentacar.com/en-US/kyrgyzstan .

Factor in the altitude when picking your vehicle, some of the high passes can get a dusting of snow even in summer, and a two-wheel drive with regular road tyres will struggle badly. A proper 4x4 gives you the confidence to keep going, when the tarmac suddenly turns into gravel and mud.
